27 Aug 2024: 24-25 Selkirk Championship underway

The first two matches of the 2024-25 championship have now been played.

The first match saw Sam Cornwell (White) record a victory over new member Tam Wylie. In the second match, Kevin Poulton fought a hard game against the experienced Ian Thompson, but a blunder under pressure decided the game in Ian's favour.

04 June 2024: Dave Bogle is 23-24 Selkirk Champion

Report by Kevin Poulton

The best game got saved to last. In an amazing game where Alan Miles was outgraded by 604 rating points against Dave Bogle. A tight opening and middle game resulted in exchanges and Alan forced a draw against the far better graded opponent. This must be the result of the tournament. Well done, Alan.

However, a draw was good enough for Dave, who played solid all the way through all his games, to win the Selkirk Club 2024 Championship and congratulations must go to Dave.

All players played 7 rated games and the final standings are:

1stDave Bogle6 pts
2nd=Bill Miller5½ pts
2nd=John Moore5½ pts
4thSam Cornwell3½ pts
5thIan Thompson3 pts
6thKevin Poulton2 pts
7thAlan Miles1½ pts
8thChris Nathan1 pt

This has been a hugely successful competition and thank you all the players who took part.

The final cross table is listed below:

05 Apr 2024: John Moore is champion

The fifth round of the Borders Individual Championship (Minor section) saw two key results:  John Moore defeated Gala's Keith Robinson; and Alistair Gray and Logan Symons drew their game.  Alistair had been the only player who could catch John Moore, and so John is the new champion.   Congratulations to the Selkirk Captain!

04 Apr 2024: Curry night at the Taste of Spice

Our annual curry night was held on Thursday 04 April in the Taste of Spice, and (as always) the food and drink were first class. A thoroughly enjoyable evening in one of the best restaurants in the area.

The Taste of Spice is in Market Place, Selkirk, and offers a wide selection of Indian and other food.

As you can see, we occupy a fairly spacious room above the main bar of the Town Arms. It is a friendly club, and we always welcome new chessplayers.
