16 Sep 2022: Death of Nick Duffell

Selkirk player Nick Duffell died on Friday 16 September - only 4 weeks after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He leaves a widow and three adult children.

Nick had played in the Borders League for many years, and was very well liked both in Selkirk and among the other clubs - deservedly so, for he was a great guy to know and a thoroughly decent man. I had quite a few games against him and they were always tough battles, with us coming out more or less equal.

In a message to the club, Nick's wife Liz said, "He so loved his chess, and Tuesday night was the highlight of his week". Thank you for that, Liz; and in turn we can assure you that Nick's company helped make Tuesdays a highlight of everyone else's week. He will be a huge miss to Selkirk and to the Borders League.

A World Champion follows Selkirk

Now here's something.  Ukrainian GM Ruslan Ponomariov has started following us on Twitter!  Ruslan was FIDE World Champion from 2002-2004, and if he wants to play for us this coming season... well, I'm sure that could be arranged.  Our Twitter page is on www.twitter.com/clubselkirk
