30 April 2022: Stasys Gimbutis is Border Champion

Stasys Gimbutis secured the Borders Individual Championship on Saturday 30 April by defeating Selkirk player Dave Bogle in their 5th round match. The NHS captain played with great accuracy in a complex game, and totally deserved the win.  In the meantime Selkirk's Martin Keen has drawn his 5th round match with Martin Wallace.

There is still one game to be played in the Premier section (Whittaker-Armstrong) but it will not affect the championship. The Bogle-Gimbutis and Keen-Wallace games are on the Matches Page.

31 May 2022: Cameron Carter takes minor section championship

In the playoff for the second section championship on 31 May, Cameron Carter defeated Nick Duffell to win the minor section of the Borders Individual Championship. The section was fairly close throughout with a number of players giving a strong showing. Cameron will have his first grade next season, and it will be very interesting to find out what that will be.

In the above crosstables, the digit before the decimal point refers to the round, and the digits after the point indicate the result: eg 5.10 = a win in the 5th round.  The playoff is indicated by round "6".

22 Apr 2022: A busy week

taste of spice

The members of Selkirk Chess Club went out on Thursday 21st April for a curry night at the Taste of Spice Restaurant in Selkirk's Market Place.  The food - as always - was excellent, and it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening.  Taste of Spice is only two or three doors along from the Town Arms, which makes the centre of Selkirk a very welcoming and nourishing place to be.  Kevin Poulton started this curry night two years ago, and it looks set to be an annual evening out.
