20 Aug 2025: Borders players in Edinburgh

On 15-17 August, two Borders players (both from Selkirk) went to take part in the Edinburgh Park Congress.   John Moore took a Friday night bye and then came away with 2½/4, while Sam Cornwell scored 2/5 in the same section.  Very decent performances from both players, and you can play through all of Sam Cornwell's games on the games page...

The photo is taken from the Scottish Chess Tour Facebook page, and shows John Moore's 4th round match against Stuart McKinney of the Gorgie Dalry club.  The game ended in a draw.

20 Aug 2025: Club news: Selkirk tournaments

The Selkirk Championship has now begun (see the initial crosstable here...) and will continue all season.  Time controls are the same as the Borders League (30/70 + 20 min quickplay) and you can play matches at your leisure throughout the season.

In other Selkirk news, the club had a lightning night on Aug 20th. At 10 seconds a move, the chess was somewhat less than Grandmaster standard, but it was a very enjoyable evening.  Congratulations to winner Mark Gardiner and runner-up Geoff Hope.

04 Aug 2025: a hugely successful Allegro

On Saturday 02 August, we hosted the 2025 Scottish Borders Allegro Chess Tournament, and what a brilliant day it was. 14 players from across the region took part in this five-round Swiss tournament, held at the South of Scotland Enterprise building (Hawick Business Centre).

The tournament was not only a celebration of local chess talent but also a showcase for our brand-new DGT boards, clocks, and pieces, funded by a £1,500 wind farm grant last year. The new digital equipment performed flawlessly, recording every game for future analysis and archiving - a first for the region.  Read the full report, with all results and a gallery of photos...
