13 Jan 2026: Selkirk B v NHS; Kelso v Gala postponed; BICC result

NHS travelled on Tuesday to the County Hotel to take on Selkirk B, and came away winners by 3-1. On board 1, a pawn sacrifice by Dave Bogle did not bring about the superior position that Dave had hoped for, and Stasys kept that pawn advantage right through to the accurate conversion of a winning minor piece ending.

Board 2 saw Selkirk's Geoff Hope spot a tactical thrust against Steve Litster's King, netting Geoff a free Rook.  When a similar motif presented itself a couple of moves later, Geoff again took advantage and forced Steve's resignation.

Max Scott won the point for NHS on Board 3, by playing a constricting positional game against Sam Cornwell.   Max won a pawn, and was eventually about to win another when Sam resigned.   Max is still a junior (unrated in Scotland) but is quite experienced and will be a great addition to the NHS team.

On board 4, Tam Wylie and Logan Symons played a rollercoaster of a game, with Logan winning a Rook on move 32 and then losing a Rook of his own only 4 moves later.  There were other twists and turns to come, but when the smoke had cleared Logan was left the exchange up (and then a Rook up) and a completely winning position.

All in all, a  good match with four very interesting games.  We have all four of them on the League Fixtures page...

The other fixture scheduled for the 13th (Kelso v Gala) has been postponed - which allowed Gala players Gordon Christie and Gerry Johnstone to play their BICC match. Gordon won that one and we will have more on that game shortly.
